(Daily Mail) – An 80-year-old man was found in his Georgia home by a sheriff’s deputy Saturday night dead on the floor, bound with duct tape, and beaten with a shot gun.
Authorities in Haralson County, Georgia have arrested 29-year-old Ronnie Duane Lewis, who had lived with Thompson, and 26-year-old Mickey Ray Mulder Jr. in the death Ophir Thompson.
A sheriff’s deputy went to the home of Ophir Thompson in Buchanan for a welfare check around 10 p.m. Saturday and found him dead on the floor.
His brother-in-law, who lives in Florida, had called to request the check-up, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported, as he couldn’t reach him by phone that day.
Authorities say Thompson was found bound with duct tape and beaten with a shotgun in his home off of Ga. Route 120.
Large sums of cash were missing, the Journal-Constitution reported, as well as horse tack and firearms.
The paper added that it was well-known in the community that Thompson kept cash in his home.
A piece of clothing at the home led to 29-year-old Ronnie Duane Lewis, who had lived with Thompson. Lewis faces charges including murder, armed robbery, and assault and battery.
Further investigation led deputies to 26-year-old Mickey Ray Mulder Jr., an associate of Lewis. Mulder faces charges of theft by receiving and being a party to crime.
Both were being in the Haralson County Jail. It wasn’t immediately clear whether they had lawyers
An autopsy performed by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation revealed that Thompson died of gunshot wounds to the head, and not blunt force trauma as authorities had originally guessed.
Sheriff Eddie Mixon said in a prepared statement: ‘The very young and the very old are the most vulnerable among us and they deserve our protection.
‘The older people of our country educated us, cared for us and should be able to enjoy peace and safety in the last years of their life.
‘Anyone who could commit a crime like this, especially against a senior, is despicable,’ the Times-Georgian reported.
