A mother, concerned that her newborn baby may have been exposed to measles at a doctor’s visit, took to Facebook to rant against the anti-vaccine crowd and the enraged post has gone viral worldwide.
Jennifer Hibben-White said her son, Griffin, may have been exposed to measles while taking him to a newborn weigh-in appointment at 15 days old. The office later called and informed the mother that a person who developed measles was in the waiting room one and a half hours prior to their arrival. Hibben-White was not concerned for herself because she had been vaccinated. Her concern centered on Griffin, who is too young for vaccines. Another point of concern was her 3-year-old daughter who has only been vaccinated once in her young life.
The mother was told to go home and stay away from small children — impossible with a newborn and a 3-year-old — and instructed to look for symptoms of fever, cough, and runny nose for the following seven days.
In the meantime, Hibben-White became furious. “And I’m angry. Angry as hell,” the mother wrote on Facebook. Not at the person in the waiting room, she clarified, but at anyone who decides against vaccination.
“I blame you,” she wrote. “You have stood on the shoulders of our collective protection for too long. From that high height, we have given you the PRIVILEGE of our protection, for free. And in return, you gave me this week. A week from hell. Wherein I don’t know if my BABY will develop something that has DEATH as a potential outcome.”
The distraught mother addressed the junk science that puts autism as a potential side effect of vaccines, often pushed by celebrity anti-vaxxer Jenny McCarthy, who is named in the post:
And I watch these arguments trotted out on Facebook and twitter citing false science and long discredited ‘studies’ that just won’t stop and Jenny McCarthy quotes and ‘it’s MY choice’ to not vaccinate…and I think…what would you have done if your child lay dying?
Hibben-White exclaimed, “Don’t you DARE tell me that you wouldn’t vaccinate them then.”
On Tuesday, CBS News reported that baby Griffin is scheduled to get the “all-clear” from doctors having not developed any symptoms of the virus.
