In an unsurprising display of Obama being Obama, a couple that was supposed to get married in Hawaii was told they couldn’t because the Commander in Chief needed his golf fix.
Army Captain Natalie Heimel and Edward Mallue Jr. had plans to be married on the 16th tee box at the Kaneohe Kipper Golf Club in Hawaii on December 28th when they heard Obama was going to be vacationing there at the same time. So they decided to invite their President. Of course, Obama declined and later that day, the couple was told they would have to move their wedding location.
“It was kind of ironic they got the letter from them and then, within hours, they were told they had to be moved due to him,” Jamie McCarthy, Mallue’s sister, told Bloomberg Politics. “It was emotional, especially for her — she’s the bride and in less than 24 hours they had to change everything they had planned.”
Naile Brennan, manager of K Bay Catering told Bloomberg that anyone who plans on having a wedding the same time Obama is in town usually has a backup location for this exact reason, saying, “Anyone planning an event at the course when the president may be in town is warned about the potential for last-minute shuffling.”
The wedding was moved to a beautiful green lawn of Colonel Eric Schaefer, the commanding officer of the Marine Corps base where the golf course is located.
According to Bloomberg, it was not clear whether the White House knew about the impending wedding and when Bloomberg inquired about it, Obama made a call to the couple. “He apologized and congratulated them,” McCarthy said. “We were all there, it was perfect. Made their day.”
