Another week, another accusation of by the left.  These things usually happen when liberals need to mask their own that’s been exposed in recent days.  This week is no different.

When someone says something considered offensive, I believe we should pause and ask one simple question … but is it true?

Just because someone is offended, the truth of the statement isn’t diminished.

Ran across this from a friend on Facebook:

Arizona GOP congressional candidate: Slavery wasn’t so bad, ‘kept business rolling’

An Republican who is running to represent the state’s 2nd District in Congress wrote on Facebook that the institution of wasn’t really so hard on and was actually good for the economy.

According to the Root’s Keli Goff, Arizona congressional hopeful Jim Brown was trying to make a statement about federal spending and the nature of “entitlements” when he veered off course into racially offensive territory.

“Back in the day of slavery, slaves were kept in slavery by denying them education and opportunity while providing them with their basic needs,” wrote Brown. “Not by beating them and starving them,” he said, adding “Although there were isolated cases, of course.”

“Basically slave owners took pretty good care of their slaves and livestock and this kept business rolling along,” he said.

As Goff noted, “This flies in the face of all credible historical accounts.”

Obviously a little hyperbole in the title.  Before we move on though, let’s evaluate his statement.

Back in the day of slavery, slaves were kept in slavery by denying them education and opportunity while providing them with their basic needs

For the most part, he’s right about all of that if we take ‘basic needs’ to be the minimum to survive.

Not by beating them and starving them

He’s only partially right about this one.  Poor farmers would often let slaves go hungry rather than go hungry themselves.  Large plantations certainly employed beatings with overseers in order to increase a slave’s productivity.  They weren’t as ‘isolated’ as Brown stated.  Beatings were certainly common for a large portion of slaves, but not all.

Basically slave owners took pretty good care of their slaves and livestock and this kept business rolling along

Again, many slaves were well taken care of physically.  There’s no denying the emotional damage of being considered someone’s property.  The absence of physical abuse doesn’t in any way make slavery hunky dory.

Now let’s evaluate the article’s statement:

As Goff noted, “This flies in the face of all credible historical accounts.”

Uh … not really.

For the record, Goff didn’t provide any evidence other than the movie “12 Years A Slave.”  It’s a simple unvalidated statement of so called ‘conventional wisdom.’ Truth is, most Americans (of all races) are ignorant of our history of slavery.  It isn’t wrong, or offensive, to point out that not all slaves were physically abused, and that many were well cared for and even loved by the people who claimed them as property.  It in no way justifies slavery, but it is an historic fact.  Pointing it out shouldn’t be attacked.

Truth is, there were caste systems among the slaves.  Some were treated horrendously, others were treated fairly well.  All were dehumanized.  There’s no doubt that this was used to keep slaves from uniting against slave owners.

Brown was partially right, partially wrong, all stupid.  Brown apologized, and removed the post.  He never advocated, justified, or gave an excuse for slavery.

His point was that the welfare system is used today to create a modern form of slavery.  He is factually correct about this point, and there is literally no denying it. Politicians use free aid to buy votes. They offer voters free stuff so long as the voter gives them blind devotion.  The politicians who only offer temporary safety nets, and requests you contribute to society and strive to reach your potential are demonized.

Slavery in America has gone from institutionalized ownership held in place by fear of physical violence to institutionalized plausibly deniable ownership held in place by the promise of free food, free housing, free utilities, free medical care, free phones, free internet, etc.  All secured without you having to work.  All you need do is vote for the politician who promises you the most.  Not quite the cotton fields of the South, but you’re still expected to perform your duties for your master. Your basic needs, and a few wants, are given to you, but your life never really improves. You are utterly dependent upon your master.

This system is secured in the same way slavery was secured by dividing the slaves into a caste system.  In the modern era, they divide the races, sexes, and foment hatred via class warfare.  It’s genius really.

So why are the leftist blogs pushing this story so hard?  The left has had a bad week for it’s own racism, or at least, racial insensitivity.

Posters started showing up around Beverly Hills of Sen. Ted Cruz depicting him as a ‘cholo.’

Obviously using a negative stereotype as a stab at his hispanic heritage.  Would have been met with outrage by the left if he were a , but he’s Republican so … meh.

Democrat Marcia Radosevich gave a Nazi salute and said ‘Heil Hitler’ at a planning board meeting.

And Alfonzo Rachel took radio host (who?) to task over her commonplace racially insensitive comments about what a black president should act like.

Apparently Miller likes the ‘gangsta rapper’ variety black president.  She once openly said she’d like a President 50 Cent.  Ironic, because 50 Cent is widely thought to be a Republican.

We also can’t forget about Democrat Alvin Holmes very racist comments about white people and aborting black babies.

Now, the MSM largely ignored all those stories.  As they typically do.  However, you have to be sure none catch traction.  So you go after some Republican, create a false racist narrative, and mobilize the masses … loudly.  The louder the better so that you don’t allow the very real racism you are responsible for to be heard over the false racism of which you are accusing your opponent.

That’s how you keep your people in line, enslave them if you will.  Give them free stuff, then turn them against someone by accusing that someone of doing exactly what you are currently doing.  Again … genius.

All designed to keep them occupied so they don’t see that you’ve been saying these horribly racist things.
