In a clear embrace of Andrew Breitbart’s famous declaration to “walk toward the fire,” Duck Dynasty famed papa Phil Robertson will be the recipient of the “Andrew Breitbart Defender of the First Amendment Award” at this year’s CPAC for causing a media firestorm after declaring homosexuality sinful during a 2013 interview with GQ.
Facing pressure from prominent homosexual activists, A&E eventually issued an indefinite suspension to Robertson from the hit show Duck Dynasty, sparking a nationwide debate over issues of free speech and religious liberty in the public square.
After severe backlash from conservative America, the primary audience for the multi-million dollar Duck Dynasty franchise, with a Facebook petition that topped Obamacare enrollments in less than 24 hours, A&E then reversed their decision and reinstated Robertson. The Gay &Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) labeled the decision “hurtful” and declared the station guilty of supporting “profits” over gays.
The award will be given out by Citizens United, which partnered with the Breitbart News Network to create the award.
“Even when the entire mainstream media demanded he disavow his beliefs and attempted to have him fired from his own hit show for expressing these beliefs, he stood firm in his faith,” Citizens United president David Bossie said.
Robertson will receive his award at CPAC on Feb. 27.
