Ian Fleming, the man behind iconic hero James Bond, might have his legacy changed if the higher ups at Sony have their way and Rush Limbaugh is not happy about it.
Following a leaked document by the Sony hackers, Amy Pascal, Co-chair of Sony pictures stated “Idris [Elba], should be the next Bond.” For those unaware, Elba, who is a phenomenal actor, is a black Britain.
And while many might be open to a black 007, true fans and Rush Limbaugh are not.
On his radio show, Rush commented on the possible change up and said, “James Bond is a total concept put together by Ian Fleming. He was white and Scottish. Period. That is who James Bond is, was.”
Now Sony is suggesting that the next James Bond should be Idris Elba, a black Britain, rather than a white from Scotland. But that’s not who James Bond is.
I know it’s racist to probably point this out, but the franchise needs to get with it! We had 50 years of white Bonds because Bond was white! Bond was never black. Ian Fleming never created a black Brit to play James Bond. He was always white, always Scottish.
But Rush was not done. He went on to say that having a black man play a role created specifically with a white man in mind is the same as having George Clooney and Kate Hudson (both white actors) play Barack and Michelle Obama in a biopic as well as Rob Reiner to play Al Sharpton in his own movie.
How about in the movie about the Obamas, ’cause there’s gonna be one, how about George Clooney play Obama and Kate Hudson play Michelle (My Belle) Obama? How would that do? I mean, if we’re gonna do this, let’s imagine it.
Al Sharpton. There will be a movie, The Al Sharpton Story. Who do we get to play Al Sharpton? ‘Cause they need two or three of ’em at various — how about Rob Reiner to play the early Al Sharpton with the bullhorn and megaphone and all that.
Despite Limbaugh’s take on the news, Elba has said if the role were offered to him, he would absolutely take it.
