Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department is reporting a 17-year-old died after playing a game of Russian Roulette and shooting himself in the head.
The teenager was in the bedroom of a Torrance apartment with two other minors when he took out a .38 Special revolver and said he was going to play Russian roulette, police said.
The others in the room “were pleading with him to put the gun down and stop playing,” Sheriff’s Detective Scott Hoglund told KTLA.
The teen didn’t listen and shot himself in the head.
Police arrived early in the morning at 4am. Neighbors reported hearing shouting and then a gunshot.
His name has not been released, but friends on social media referred to him as “Jerry” and said he is a student at Carson High School.
The revolver was a stolen weapon, but police are still investigating who it belongs to and who took it, Deputy Amber Smith told the Daily News. Police have not yet said if there was only one bullet in the gun, as is standard practice for Russian roulette.
The shooting was ruled an accidental death and no charges will be filed. Family members said they did not know the teen had a gun.
