The Most Pirated Movies of 2014

The Wolf of Wall Street barely edged out Frozen as 2014’s most pirated film, with Robocop (1987 and 2014 versions combined) and Gravity a close third and fourth. According to piracy-tracking firm Excipio, each of the top four film were pirated around 30 million times, with the top 20 pirated films averaging well over 20 million downloads each.

Though a drama and an animated film earned the top two spots, those genres were not generally as popular as sci-fi/fantasy and superhero films, which took 14 of the top 20 spots. Traditional dramas accounted for 3 of the top 20, while 2 were historical, and only 1 animated.

Excipio noted that the numbers for the third most downloaded film, Robocop, includes downloads of both the 2014 and 1987 versions, which the firm’s tracking methods were unable to differentiate.
